Yesterday's summit dialogue provided many insights into different interpretations to the limits that should exist on freedom of speech. This morning you had an opportunity to learn more about the American education system. Share your reflections on these topics...
The discussion with respect to freedom of speech enabled us, as young leaders, to share our views and opinions diplomatically and establish common ground on the problems that were posed.
ReplyDeleteToday, we found out more about the American educational system which allowed us to exchange ideas. We then attended Ms. T's class and had lots of fun playing with the kids.
Today was a fabulous day. The theme of the day was supposed to be about education, but I haven't done anything related to education yet! However, I played piano. I interacted with the divine essence of universe using the language of melody.

the freedom of speech dialogue was very interesting and thoughtful...
ReplyDeleteWe got to hear a lot of opinions on the topic as well as find common grounds and resolutions to problems relating to the topic.
The division into larger groups is working better than the divison into groups of 4.
The conversation we had with teachers on the education system was informative but did not really open doors to discussion on the topic.
The dialogue on freedom of speech and press provided information about each country's different policies and perspectives on freedom of speech and press. As a whole, we shared an idea that freedom of speech should be respected at most times, unless one harms the other or the society. Learning about the American education system. I realized the difference between Korean education, although our GLP program is more like American education system currently. I thought it is good to learn with activities that draws interest. Furthermore, I was very impressed to see how the disabled children are respected and taken care of.
ReplyDeleteDiscussing "freedom of speech and press" yesterday was interesting. We got introduced to the different point of views of the 7 countries regarding that issue. We then practiced a dance for the farewell dance, it was so much fun. I then stayed for the talent show which i thought was awesome. Today we did the glow dance t-shirts in the morning and then headed to miss t's class which was really nice!
ReplyDeleteI was, again, able to see an increase in participation in the third dialogue, even though our backgrounds are so different, we were able to find a common opinion on most of the issues. This morning we were able to participate in classes of various teachers, for me this was AP Biology, this class really made me able to compare the level of our and the Amertican education. Apart from that, tonight a series of events will take place, the tailgate, a girls soccer game, and a latin dance party in Parkview, a neighbouring school.
ReplyDeleteAmerica's education system is vastly different from Singapore's/ that of most Asian countries, in that it grants students a lot more freedom in choosing their classes and in their daily social life too. This is a stark contrast to Singapore's - where even though we have the liberty to choose our subjects, there are still restrictions and requirements we have to adhere to. For instance, students in junior college (the equivalent of Grades 11-12) choose either to be in the Science or Arts stream, and most of our subjects have to be in accordance with the chosen stream. As for social life, there is definitely more regulation in Singapore with regard to things like daily morning assemblies, school uniform, attire checks and so on. The short discussion we had in the morning thus gave me insight as to how different education systems all over the world are, and provided me with many thoughts on what kind of system best benefits students and society.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the discussion but would have liked it to be longer, and more focused, as I felt that the discussion lacked structure and over-arching topics. I think education is an issue that's very close to all our hearts, since we are still in the midst of schooling, and thus will have ample perspectives and opinions on. I would love to discuss more on different education systems in the world, especially since education is an issue that I feel strongly for.
Today we went to have a class with special kids. One girl we meet ,I like her very much.
ReplyDeleteI personally felt that yesterday's discussions weren't as intense as I expected and I was surprised that most countries agreed that freedom of expression that infringes on other people's rights is not to be condoned.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the discussions with the Dominion students and teachers today. I was pleasantly surprised by the pride the different students had for their countries and education systems, something I don't feel a lot of in Singapore. I also think that it is admirable that Dominion has a special department specially for special need kids. I think that is really meaningful, as in my country, these kids are given care separately in another school. I think being able to interact with special needs kids on a daily basis is actually a good idea as it helps to erode any misconceptions of these kids and improve the social fabric.
I also really enjoyed making the glow shirts; that was really cool and fun:)
When I asked people who tries to improve socially undeveloped places about the most important factor that needs to be improved, they always said education. Today, we learned about the American educational system and also joined the typing department that was opearted by students. It was a good opportunity to learn the education in America
ReplyDeleteToday was a fun day,we talked about education with a math teacher. That's fun.And then we have a class with special kids, they are very lovely ,i feel a little sad about them,i want them get better.
ReplyDeleteWe discussed how languages are taught in our respective countries and I definitely think that more can be done to make language classes in Singapore more inspiring and engaging. It would probably be better if we focus more on actual communication and expression as opposed to examination standards as we currently are. I really appreciated how the US system and other countries' systems make efforts to engage students with the respective cultures. We also visited Ms T's class and I think its really great how there are special in-house programmes to help and reach out to the community. Definitely something other countries can consider to make a school an active contributor in society.

For me, the highlight of yesterday is the talent show at night. The performers were the most talented people I have ever met, while they are high school students just like me. It was really an eye-opener for me, and I believe China needs to emphasize skills in the fine arts so that we don't waste people's talents by forcing them to study all day.
